Position Illustrator, Artist
MATT HUYNH is a comic creator and illustrator based in Sydney, Australia.
Huynh began self-publishing to put more of the kind of comics that he wanted to read and see on the shelves. His diversity of genres and processes, from surrealist fantasy to polemical essays, community collaborations and biography, have garnered accolades from a broad audience, including Berlin’s Young Illustrator’s Award. Huynh has recently been shortlisted by the 2010 Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards in the Visual Arts category. The 2009 Creative Sydney Festival named him one of the most innovative contributors to Sydney’s culture and he was awarded the inaugural Design NSW Travelling Scholarship to pursue a worldwide professional development trip to train and work in residence under some of the world’s most influential illustrators and comic creators.
Huynh strives to enthuse Australian comics identity by showcasing work across unexpected contexts, from a storefront display for Incu Clothing‘s fashion boutique to a pop-up art festival at Cabra-Vale Leisure Centre and an exhibition in a Newtown boxing gym. Beyond comics, Huynh has explored new media and public art with the Popperbox artists’ collective, including the painting of a 30m long mural. Huynh is currently committed to the development and release of a new and original illustration series to coincide with every season over the course of one year.
