The DOONCHICKS, otherwise known as 'the red hot mummas' of percussion, was formed in 2005 and comprises musician friends and more advanced students who live west and southwest of Sydney. Since then we have regularly performed at festivals, weddings, theme parties and other special events in local government areas from Penrith, to Parramatta, to Ashfield. Our aim is to celebrate life through drumming and dance, and to share this with others.
The drums used by the group are from West Africa, and include the djembe, or hand drum, and Dundun, the large drums played with sticks. Our performance features the Dunduns, hence our name, DOONCHICKS. Although the music is derived from West African rhythms, the music has our own particular interpretation and arrangements.
The group is directed by Annette Maie who has over ten years’ experience. Trained in Physical Education, with a major in dance, she holds an MA in Dance from UCLA, and a Phd in Social Ecology from UWS on performance-ritual. For further information on classes visit www.artfiles.com.au/annettemaie
